Chapter 1 - Introduction

After a full-on two years of COVID it was time to again hit the road. We did get away for over 3 months last year, but Melbourne remained in lockdown for a lot of that period.

We have been to Darwin numerous times but never towed the caravan there. So that was the plan. We last visited Litchfield National Park and Kakadu in 1993, so we thought that it was time to also revisit those famous spots.

Shirley found a few more spots in the Northern Territory that were worthy of a stop so they were also added to the schedule. A soak in a few warm/hot artesian springs was also an item of interest. Uluru was also on the schedule.

We have enjoyed farm and station stays on previous trips so they were also considered.

Above average rainfall (read that as "floods") in NSW and Queensland meant that there was lots of water along the east coast. So there was no rush to get into those areas. However, they would feature in the second half of the trip.

A September wedding in Port Douglas caused a late change to the schedule, and that should be a hoot. I wonder if I can wear shorts and thongs. It also means that I will have another co-driver for around a week. More on that later.

But first things first. We have changed caravans. COVID has forced us to reconsider whether we should have a caravan with a shower and toilet - to allow us to avoid public conveniences more often than not. The answer was a resounding Yes.  So we purchased a 22' Paramount Classis caravan, very similar layout to our much loved Galaxy caravan. No oven, but a bigger fridge and a HWS.

New Kelly Caravan

The trip should have over 12,000 km of touring and over six weeks of relaxing.

Hopefully you will hear about campfires, camp ovens, birds, wild-life, lakes, rivers, beachessmoothies, sunsets, sunrises - and maybe a good wine with friends ................ maybe some damper and scones............

We plan to enjoy the journey. I hope you do so as well.
